About the Author

Hello, I’m Heikki Valkonen, tango enthusiast, arranger, band leader, and DJ.

As a young man I studied musical composition and music theory at the Sibelius Academy, and musicology at the University of Helsinki. For some years I gave instruction in musical analysis at the Academy, but then I lost my faith is modern art music and was carried away by information technology.

A bit more that ten years ago I found Argentine tango, and as I became more and more acquainted with it as a dancer and an occasional DJ, I realized that my ancient skills can help me understand the inner workings of tango music and how it interacts with the dancers. Today I am the leader and arranger of Sexteto Viento and the chairman of Argentiinalaisen tangomusiikin ystävät ry (Friends of Argentine tango music). This blog grew out of a wish to share my findings and observations with the tango community.
